Stomach Cancer Overview

Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is a disease that develops when cancer cells form in the lining of the stomach. The stomach is a j shaped organ that is part of the digestive system. It is located in the upper part of the abdomen.

Symptoms of Stomach Cancer

Many times, stomach cancer does not present any symptoms in the early stages. It is so important to talk about any symptoms or discomforts you are experiencing early on. The symptoms of stomach cancer are also symptoms of many other illnesses.Common symptoms of stomach cancer include blood in the stool, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss.

Causes and Risk Factors for Stomach Cancer

We do not know exactly what causes stomach cancer. However, research has defined several risk factors for the disease. Having a risk factor does not mean you will absolutely develop the disease; it only means you have a higher chance of developing it.

Common risk factors for stomach cancer include smoking, chronic gastritis, poor diet, and a diet high in salted and preserved foods.

Preventing Stomach Cancer

Because we don't exactly know what causes stomach cancer, prevention isn't possible. The best way to reduce your risk factor for stomach cancer is to avoid the risk factors.
