Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is identical to the traditional gastric bypass except that instead of being performed through an incision extending from the lowest aspect of the breastbone (xiphoid process) to below the umbilicus (navel), it is performed through several smaller incisions each measuring about an inch or less in length. A laparoscope connected to a video camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity and the inside of the abdominal cavity is visualized on video monitors. Long thin surgical instruments and especially designed staplers are inserted through additional small incisions; the surgeon performs the surgery by watching the video monitor.
There are several weight loss surgeries available today but adjustable Gastric Band is superior to many of them. It has several features that make it the safest method of weight control.
- Simplicity - The procedure is simple to perform with a short operating time.
- It can be placed laparoscopically without a large incision.
- It does not require any opening in the gastrointestinal tract that reduces the risk of infection.
- Safety: There is no staple line to burst.
- It is adjustable and can be customised to individual needs.
- It is fully reversible. The band can be emptied, for example, during pregnancy or prolonged illness allowing your stomach to return to former configuration or it can be removed (although removal is not indicated)
- It is tolerated well by most persons of all ages and physical conditions.
- This operation may be particularly suited to persons who are from 80 to 200 pounds overweight.
- Short hospital stay (around 24 hours)
- Lowest complication rate.
- There is no mal-absorption or "dumping syndrome." The person can fully digest vitamins and minerals
Since the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the LAP-BAND System in June 2001, interest in and use of the LAP-BAND System have been rapidly growing in the U.S.:country-region> In line with its FDA - approved guidelines for indications, the LAP-BAND System is intended for people who are morbidly obese—those who are at least 100 pounds overweight or who are at least twice their ideal body weight. The term “morbidly” connotes the fact that individuals who carry this much excess weight face an increased risk of developing a number of serious health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis.
In February 2002, a report released by the United States Food and Drug Administration Office of Device Evaluation named the LAP-BAND System as one of the Significant Device Breakthroughs. The Office of Device Evaluation highlighted the LAP-BAND System with several other new products as significant medical breakthroughs “as they are first of a kind, e.g., they use a new technology or provide a major diagnostic or therapeutic advancement, such as reducing hospital stays.
